Memes as vehicles of political communication

Posting and sharing political internet memes could pursue different goals; it could be a means of emotional expression, a means of fostering ingroup cohesion, or a means of communication. If the latter is the main goal, the question arises: Are political internet memes a viable vehicle for transporting information? Can they be learned from, and if so, under which circumstances?
